Data conversion is the literal “Converting” of data from one format to another or one system to another.

Data conversion issues are commonly encountered when moving from:
one Operating System to another — e.g. Windows to Unix/Linux
One database version to another — e.g. Oracle 8 which is not unicode compliant to Oracle 11g that is unicode compliant.
One text format to another e.g. Cyrillic to English (character set and Code page issue)
One ERP system to another – from Baan IV to Oracle or SAP
One CRM system to another — Salesforce to Siebel or SAP CRM
Lossy format to lossless — e.g. JPEG to PNG files

Data Conversation for a Unicode compliant systems can be done only when the code version is known: Sample versions are: UTF-8, UTF-16/UCS-2, UTF-32/UCS-4, UTF-7, UTF-EDCDIC, GB18030, SCSU, BOCU-1

Knowing what character set or code page to convert is only one part of the challenge.

The other challenges that are encountered are:
The source system has 100 columns the target system has 120 and from the delta the 20 new columns , 15 are required columns.

The new columns are shorter in length , eg 50 characters in the target system vs the legacy system where the field was longer e.g 100 characters.

Successful data conversion requires expert knowledge of both source and target system formats.
